The Cold Exposure Protocol

◇ WHAT IT IS

Dossier 028 graded cold-water immersion EMERGING: a real hormetic edge for alertness and stress-resilience with a genuine catecholamine mechanism, wrapped in a layer of mood, immunity, inflammation and fat-loss claims the controlled evidence does not support. This protocol is how you actually run cold — for the outcomes it delivers, and away from the one moment it sabotages.

The whole thing reduces to three decisions: what it's FOR (resilience, alertness, sleep — not fat loss or 'inflammation'), how COLD and how LONG (short and genuinely cold beats long and lukewarm), and — the one that separates the operator from the influencer — WHEN NOT to do it (never in the hours after a hypertrophy session, where cold blunts the growth you trained for).

Dose — short and genuinely coldRoughly 10–15°C water, brief immersion — even 30–90 s of true cold shock triggers the catecholamine response; a few minutes is plenty once adapted. Colder-and-shorter drives the signal; longer-and-lukewarm adds risk, not benefit. Chasing duration is ego, not physiology.
The Timing Firewall — cold vs muscleThe non-negotiable. In a muscle-building phase, keep cold OUT of the ~4–6 hours after resistance training — post-lift immersion suppresses hypertrophy (Roberts 2015; Fyfe 2019). Take it on rest days or mornings instead. In a peaking or competition block, between-event cold for recovery is fair game.
The Breath — control is the skillThe cold-shock gasp is automatic; overriding it with slow, controlled exhalation is the trainable part and the source of the resilience carryover. Never hyperventilate before cold-water immersion (blackout risk), and never breath-hold with the head submerged.
Adaptation — build tolerance, don't force itStart with cold showers or brief dips and extend as tolerance builds. The sick-day and resilience signals come from consistent, repeated exposure over weeks — not from one heroic plunge.

The open research question is the minimum effective dose — how cold, how long, how often — for each outcome (resilience vs sleep vs metabolic). As controlled trials mature, OCCABUZZ will grade each protocol against the honest baseline: real for resilience and alertness, unproven for the headline claims.

Cold as a governed input, not a ritual
