A 2025 systematic review (11 studies, 3,177 participants) found cold-water immersion improves sleep quality and quality of life, and a single 14°C immersion drives a large acute catecholamine surge (noradrenaline ~+530%, dopamine ~+250% in early work) that powers the 'alive,' stress-resilient feeling. But it did NOT improve mood, and it TEMPORARILY RAISES inflammation rather than lowering it. Cold plunges are sold as a universal cure — inflammation, mood, metabolism, testosterone. The honest science is narrower and more useful: a real hormetic stressor with a genuine neurochemical kick and modest sleep/resilience gains, wrapped in a layer of claims the data does not support.

The single fact that separates the operator from the influencer: cold immersion has a timing window where it works AGAINST you. Take it right after a hypertrophy session and you blunt the very adaptation you trained for. Grading cold means grading WHEN, not just whether.
